Establishing Drosophila as a model for studying Neprilysins role in metabolism

Project Investigator: Jennifer Curtiss

Project Description:  Human Neprilysin is a druggable target that has been shown to exacerbate the effects of diabetes in humans, but the mechanisms are unclear. The fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster is an excellent genetic model for uncovering the mechanisms of diabetes, and we have preliminary evidence that Drosophila Neprilysins have a similar role as in humans. Our project seeks to confirm the roles of Drosophila Neprilysins in regulating metabolism in the context of diabetes, in order to guide development of drugs that will ease the effects of human diabetes.
