Inhibiting melanogenesis using a phytoene/phytofluene-enriched algal extract in melanoma

Project Investigator:  Amanda Ashley

Project Description: High levels of the pigment melanin the skin protects a person from developing melanoma, however, once melanoma is established, high levels of pigmentation is associated with worse clinical outcomes. We are using naturally-derived carotenoids, similar to beta-carotene found in carrots, to decrease formation of melanin. Our project aims to understand how the carotenoid can prevent melanin from forming in melanoma cells. Our overall goal is to determine whether these carotenoids might be useful in treating individuals with melanoma and people with skin conditions characterized by abnormal skin pigmentation.
